Since then, various other characters (including female ones) using the name "Hawk" and "Dove" have appeared over the years, but "Brave and the Bold" is using the original ones.

After Showcase, the two got their own short-lived comic, then made sporadic appearances (mostly in "Teen Titans") until "Crisis on Infinite Earths", where Dove was one of the various heroes used as cannon fodder (i.e. The two were created by Steve Ditko (the co-creator of Spider-Man) and Steve Skeates (a comic writer in the late 60s through 80s), and debuted in the late 60s in "Showcase" #75. (Keeping with the justice theme, their Dad was a judge). HAWK AND DOVE: Hawk and Dove, as seen here, were a pair of brothers whose shtick was Hawk being, well, hawkish and aggressive, while his brother Dove emphasized a more pacifistic approach to crimefighting. Yes, I got a bit of a Slade vibe from him as well (mostly from a similar-sounding voice).Īnd on to the part everyone seems to like: This one was so-so, being rather heavy on fight scenes (per OMAC), but did give us more of mysterious villain Equinox, who'll be sure to return for future episodes. Unless he somehow uses his new powers to interfere in dozens or possibly hundred of conflicts at once.Īfter what feels like forever, the return of new episodes of BatB. Though how does Equinox decide what conflicts he tries to keep the balance with, the distuction of that village seemed fairly low-scale. His Not-So-Different speech with Batman didn't really work that well from a standpoint of successfully comparing himself to Batman, but it does provide a good look into Equinox himself, his motivations (well a slight elaboration from what he already knew) and especially how he sees Batman. Though with the "serving a higher power" quote they may pay off, story-wise.

The magic powers were new, Mystery in Space made it seem as if he was just a skilled human, so I'm not sure how I feel about his new abilities. I thought when I first saw him he was going to be interesting (still holding out for a Question/Equinox episode) and he's definately proven it here. Shrapnel himself wasn't too interesting: same old revenge motif, even with a bit more emphasis on it this time. Though I suppose I wasn' too far off the mark with the "destroying that village" thing. I actually expected Shrapnel to be the good guy and the orgainization (name? FPA I think) to have been evil in some way. They really seem to be too impatient to be very effective. However both OMAC adopting Batman's tactics and Buddy getting a shot in the limelight seemed fairly predictable and by the books.Īdding to the list of things I haven't heard of this episode (strange since even with the previous episodes I usually had at least a passing knowledge of the characters), is that peacekeeping orgainization that they worked for. Though I'm not sure on the execution: it was alright enough, and I liked the focus on the moral implications of turning Buddy into a weapon, but it wasn't brought up much again. Anyway the concept behind him (or at least how he was portrayed in this episode) was pretty interesting.

I haven't really heard of OMAC before, but I suppose that's what Brave and the Bold is about: showcasing all the more obscure heroes.
